WEiRD - Week 5 November 27, 2011 WEiRD
WEiRD like John the Baptist
John the Baptizer ate weird things, dressed weird, and challenged people with weird teachings even when it made people really angry to be confronted with their sin. If you decide to be weird like John the Baptizer, you may look different, dress different, talk different, or even eat different, but your life will be all about pointing others toward Jesus.

Key Verse: For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes…  (Romans 1:16 NLT)

The Point: Don’t be shy about sharing your faith. It’s not just a good kind of weird, it’s a God kind of weird.

WEiRD like Moses, Aaron, & Miriam
Miriam and Aaron cared for and looked out for their brother Moses and helped him throughout many difficult challenges even when he’s the one who ended up getting to be a famous leader. If you decide to be weird like Moses and his siblings, you may spend more time with your family, and treat your family differently from everyone else, but your family will show the world what God’s love is like.

Key Verse: So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.  (John 13:34 NLT)

The Point: Love your family and treat them well. It’s not just a good kind of weird, it’s a God kind of weird.

WEiRD like Esther
It would have been safer and easier for Esther to just go on living in the palace and ignore the danger her people were in. She risked her safety and comfortable lifestyle to do what she knew was right. She risked her life to save other people’s lives. If you decide to be weird like Esther, you may be called upon to do something really risky and difficult but you will be showing the world what God’s power can do when we trust in Him.

Key Verse: In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted…  (2 Timothy 3:12 NIV)

The Point: Stand up for what’s right even when it’s hard. It’s not just a good kind of weird, it’s a God kind of weird.

WEiRD like Ezekiel
Ezekiel did some really weird things. Everyone thought he was weird. But he was just doing what God told him to do. It’s weird to obey God no matter how bizarre it may seem. If you decide to be weird like Ezekiel, God may show you weird things and ask you to do or say weird things, but you’ll be pointing them to Jesus.

Key Verse: Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant. (Galatians 1:10 NLT)

The Point: Obey God no matter what. It’s not just a good kind of weird, it’s a God kind of weird.

WEiRD Like Jesus
We want students understand that their leader, Jesus was the biggest weirdo of all. We want them to understand that if they follow Jesus then eventually they will be considered weird. They will make enemies and they will be persecuted. We want them to know that how they respond to enemies and persecution is a way to prove just how weird they are!

Key Verse: Matthew 5

The Point: Jesus was a weirdo. Are you?
